A few days later, about seven miles up the Cache La Poudre, Moose and Buzzer were sitting around their campfire, cogitating, if that’s the right word to describe the mental processes of two such sluggish brains. Moose was tall and gaunt. Buzzer was short and fat. Moose had big yellow teeth; Buzzer had hardly any left. But otherwise they were much the same: ragged, dirty, hairy and smelly. Buzzer was Buzzer because he looked like a bumblebee, sort of, and always seemed to be hovering around when others were gathered. Nobody could remember why Moose was “Moose”, except Moose, of course, and he wasn’t telling. But with the teeth and the long jowly face, it may have been resemblance, like Buzzer.

As bandits, they were not great successes. They hadn’t the ability to make elaborate plans either for the robbery or the running away after the robbery. They’d been in jail more than once, but as the loot was never extensive and they hadn’t killed anybody, or at least anybody that anybody had found out about, though not for lack of trying, they got off lightly and were soon on their way to test their luck somewhere else. They’d been through most of the gold camps in the area and it was too soon to go back.

The loot from the trading post hadn’t taken them far, and they needed a new injection of funds. Moose was all for going back to the trading post. “We know the gal’s alone so will be easy to deal with; we know there’s lots more there ‘cause we seen it. To tell the truth, what he most remembered was the gal, and he had plans for her that he didn’t want to share with Buzzer.

“Naw, she’ll be ready for trouble. It’s too soon.” The gossip’s that she’s got lots of friends, and one or more of ’em might just be sticking around to look out for her.” Let’s hit that immigrant bunch we saw down by the river yesterday. There was only the one man with’em.”

“They’d be hardly worth the hassle and there were a passel of children and them types learn to shoot young.” It’s too risky. Let’s at least go back to the trading post tomorrow night for a look see, kind of work it out.” Moose generally got his own way when the two disagreed, and his secret agenda added weight to his rhetoric. So that’s what they decided to do.
